I have to be honest and say straight off that I don't like Alex. She is to 'knowing' and it feels as though Keeley Hawes is playing her for laughs.
However, I do find the setting fun - it's not LOM and it shouldn't try to be but it is certainly from the same stable. I do hope that we see a little more of the old Gene Hunt...he appears to have lost his way a little.
Well, we have six more eps for it to come good. We are measuring it against some very fine TV if we try to compare it to LOM. Perhaps I should cut it a little more slack...after all it's not like anything else on TV at the moment.
I'm trying really hard not to compare it to LoM, but then Ash does things like poke fun at us with the Quattro not going through boxes moment, and, well, it's obvious that some comparisons must be made.
I find it very hard to like television shows when I don't like the main protagonist or can't connect with them. And no, I don't like Alex.
I actually really loved Gene's characterisation in Ep 1 - he was quiet and a bit miserable and he covered Alex with a blanket, which is the best thing ever. And then he seemed to regress in Ep 2, to an even darker Gene. It's the inconsistency that I find difficult to keep up with.
